This is the first in my newest series of photos dedicated to Roadside Memorials.
For the longest time I wondered what drew people to creating these memorials. I understand that death is tough for those who are left behind, and even more so when some one is taken tragically, but what makes some one leave a shrine like these?
Some of these memorials are created and forgotten some are kept up for years after the loss, much like graves in cemetaries around the world. Seasonal flowers, fresh candles, favorite trinkets surround these markers. Some are marked with a name some are anonymous, but it does not make any of them less special or heartfelt.
While I wonder why there may or may not be a grave somewhere getting similar treatment, or if this memorial was some how tied to reminding us to drive slower or safer, it still has a place of tribute to someone who was loved and yet is gone.
I will admit I do not understand these tributes completely, but I can see the desire to hold on to a memory just a minute longer, to have a place to say goodbye or make a statement about a life lost. I do not want to be remembered where I died but maybe its not that for these caretakers, maybe it is the last place these people lived.

Its Tanks Turn!
Jun. 15th, 2006 | 12:17 pm

This amazing piece of artwork was donated by Matthew Goodmanson http://www.gensanova.com/portfolio/thum
Sadly I had a very low turn out for the raffle so I am auctioning this piece off. The piece is 11" x 17" on a sturdy acid free comic board, in ink and is signed. The piece is perfect for framing and is one of a kind.
You also get a naughty girl 6 imp pack of BPAL.
The winner will pay CBLDF directly which is great because you also receive a additional membership at no additional cost!
Current bid is: $20
I will also have two fan art drawings available for auction of Lola Goth versions of Death and Delirium. These are ink drawings done on medium weight acid free sketch paper. Winners will also get 3 BPAL imps per picture.

Opening bid: $5 each
Bids will be taken until Sunday July 16th.

Good Omens is the equivalent of a lightweight gateway drug to the world of heretical ideas...
Jun. 12th, 2006 | 11:59 am
This was posted on Neil Gaiman's personal webpage;
It's letters like this one that make me glad that I don't do a problems page...
I really love your work and I think you're a very talented writer. However, I recently read Good Omens and my girlfriend who happens to be a devout christian caught me reading it (I had to read it while she slept beside me, otherwise bad things could (and did) occur). Yes, I probably should have read it in the bathroom or something. :)
I know this sounds absurd, but do you have any suggestions for getting her back? I love her and I love you. I don't know what to do.
-seymour
Your girlfriend left you because she caught you reading Good Omens next to her in bed? And she left you because she's a "devout Christian"? Had she read Good Omens and not liked it and told you not to read it too, or is it just the sort of book that she'd leave a boyfriend over without actually reading?
I keep trying to understand this one, and just end up with my mind sort of boggling.
I think that any attempt you make to get back together with her is going to have to involve you getting across to her the concept of fiction. It's made-up stories. They don't imperil anybody's immortal soul. Possibly pointing out that there isn't actually a verse of the bible where Jesus slags off funny fiction and explains that people who think that Good Omens is funny will send you straight to hell, then warns that there's a special place in Hell for people who read Harry Potter books too, might work. Or she might just think you were being facetious. Pointing out that Good Omens wound up nominated for a major religious fiction award in 1989, that I once got a fan letter about it from an Anglican bishop, and that most religious people find it, er, funny might also be a good idea -- better still would be getting her to read it too and having a discussion about the ideas in it if you want to have some kind of future together in which you can exchange ideas and communicate without fear.
Failing that, I can't see that life is going to be much fun if you wind up spending the rest of it with someone who forces you to sneak into the bathroom at night to get your secret fix of fictional matter. You can give up reading things by me for the rest of your life (I don't mind, I'll cope) but someone who leaves you because you're reading Good Omens is probably going to want you to give up reading an awful lot of other stuff as well before she'll come back. Good Omens is the equivalent of a lightweight gateway drug to the world of heretical ideas in fictional form. Think of the precautions you'd have to take to make sure you weren't discovered before you'd be able to read Dan Brown, or Preacher...
This has to be one of the funniest things I have read in a long time!!! I love Neil!

BaRNI
Jun. 7th, 2006 | 02:18 pm
Well I was finally able to get in contact with these guys (I swear AOL hates me) and I felt so good having let them know what I am doing. They were so excited to get help which makes me want to help them even more!
We have been supporting these guys for a few years since we first found out about them. The first time we went and visited their kennels I was shocked at how good all the dogs were and how good they looked. Sure you could tell that some had problems (quite a few twisted feet, a genetic problem with some bassets) but they all looked happy. We had Harly Quinn with us (our great dane who was raised with a basset) and though she was a bit overwhelmed with all those hounds coming at here at the gate, they had to smell the big new dog, and though super excited everyone got along really well and just sniffed away. We were treated very nice when we went inside by all the volunteers as was our large honorary Basset.
They gave us a tour and I was very happy that everyone seemed to know a lot about the personalities of these dogs but also that even the dogs with what seemed like some serious problems (both behavioral and physical) were worked with and treated so well. I remember one of the poor girls who had been found after the fires, she was burned and had bad eyes it was so sad to see her but later I saw pictures of a whole new dog who went on to find a new home. The stories are so sad sometimes just heartbreaking but when you see these guys all together and having a good time it makes you feel so good that some one gave them a real chance.
They are trying to currently raise funds for a dog named EV who was found in a Carson shelter emaciated, barely able to walk and with constant twitching in her back legs. EV is able to use her rear leg, despite neurological damage of unknown origin. Surgery to alleviate pain and help her on the road to recovery is expected to run between $4,500 - $5,500 and at a year old this dog deserves all the help she can get. So I have decided to ear mark all funds raised by my fund raisers for BaRNI are going to help this little girl get some surgery to help her out.

My Dream
May. 27th, 2006 | 04:43 pm
This was such a nice dream I have been wanting to share it because it just made me feel so good about all that I am doing right now. That all the stress and work I have put towards this has been worthwhile and I won't regret anything.
Basically the dream was simple.
I was standing with the ponytail of my hair in my hand and turned to look at Johnny and he was crying, sobbing and all that. He was so upset. As I told him it was all done, I had cut my hair. As he was crying I told him "I feel this is good I get to help some poor kid out who needs the help, and I get to try and make at least a small difference in their life" As I talked he seemed to relax and get used to my new hair cut. As I stood there I could feel the wind on the back of my scalp like when I use to have my short hair. It made me smile and I loved the feeling.
Again a super insanely simple dream but it really has made me relax more as I approach the third. I decided that though I will keep a few of the fundraisers up for a bit longer that is going to be the day that I do it. I am so ready.

Hair Charity Update and Sale
May. 22nd, 2006 | 05:44 pm
First the current total is over $625.
I wanted to update everyone who bought or won tickets in my raffle due to the slow sales there was only one cash drawing for $100. The winner was Sherry (not from this forum). But don't worry if you didn't win I still have the prize drawing which will be happening this Sunday at 8pm (PST). Every ticket from the past drawing is in and I am selling prize only tickets for $1 each. Just some of the prizes are listed http://tankgirl.servebeer.com/hair/raff le.htm and the list of charities is http://tankgirl.servebeer.com/hair/char ities.htm
As a incentive to help raise more funds I am going to give all your BPALer's a special deal for every 50 tickets sold I will be doing a special raffle for a very rare oil and a mixed set of GC's and LE's. For the first 50 the oil will be decant of Shub-Niggurath, at 100 tickets it will be Formula 54 (my last imp) and finally at 150 tickets it will be a untested decant of Pumpkin King. I hope I can get the 150 it is a chance to do a good deed and win some oils that just don't show up that often. This raffle will only include tickets purchased by BPALer's and you still will be included for the other prizes.
I also have some simple sales with all funds going to charity-
Handblended Teas from www.spicetradersteas.com
All teas are sealed in wonderful metal tins all hold 2 oz of loose teas (for more information check out the site)
Roobios-
This tea is grown in South Africa and is considered of their strongest red teas. It is often used as an alternative to coffee with a full taste and has no caffeine! If you've ever heard of African bush tea, then you familiar with the intricate taste our Rooibos tea has to offer!
Pasionate Kisses-
A delicious blend of some of our most coveted flavors. This tea has a strong and delicious sweat smell almost reminiscent of candy at your local carnival. Give it a try - it's passionate kisses!
Licorice Mint -
A very soothing tea for the body. Licorice Mint is a brisk blend with just a hint of licorice root that we have found settles even the worst of tummy aches. Try it for its unique flavor and for its soothing properties.
Wicca Woman (Women's Blend)-
Finally, something just for the lady at her time! We're not kidding - we have found that our blend of raspberry leaf, lemon verbena, vitexberry, nettles, lemon peel, cinnamon, stevia leaf and cloves can help minimze those annoying monthly cramps! So sit back and sink into its delicious and smooth flavor. You'll thank us for it.(Note: This stuff is amazing!!!! I found it helped with my cramps and more it saves me every month)

The Flyers are going up!
Apr. 19th, 2006 | 12:42 pm
Ok I have added a simple flyer to the site so I can get in person donations from well everyone!! I am also starting several raffles in person to help raise money. I plan on raising funds on site at the renaissance faire but with the fundraising for Ronnie I will be holding back a bit since one of our own is very important. I am glad to say I already have one person who said that they would sponsor me they said they are going to offer $5 per inch of hair. I am so glad about this!
I plan on offering more items as soon as I find some donations and get some empty imps. I have a lot of BPAL I am debating offering up and as soon as I get over my initial uncomfortableness of asking for help, I am hoping to get some donations for a physical raffle and a few more auctions.
Keep an eye out for me and again don't forget you don't have to wait for me you can directly donate to any of the charities just let me know and maybe their will be some goodies involved!! Thanks!
